PPA ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF 2006 EDITORIAL AND DESIGN AWARDS FOR LEADING PARENTING PUBLICATIONS

LOS ANGELES (March 3, 2007) — Kentucky Families Today magazine, south central Kentucky’s only locally and independently owned magazine for families, received two national awards at the Parenting Publications of America (PPA) Annual Convention in Nashville, TN.

Recognized for excellence in both design and editorial, Kentucky Families Today was honored with a bronze award for Best Overall Use of Photography, and a silver award for General Feature Writing.

The PPA gave out over 370 Editorial and Design Competition awards to 80 parenting newspapers and magazines at a banquet on March 3, 2007, the climax of the three-day convention.

PPA's Editorial and Design Awards Competition recognizes excellence in journalism, photography and design achieved by publishers, editors, writers and designers at member publications. Prof. Daryl Moen of the University of Missouri's School of Journalism coordinated the annual contest. A panel of judges reviewed 1,184 entries this year (up from 1,048 last year) to choose the winners in each category. All judges have had significant professional experience.

In Editorial categories, columns remain a strength across all the categories. The best column writers use such narrative devices as anecdotes and scenes to tell stories and inform their readers. In the Best Reporting category, the judge reported that the best of the entries were outstanding.

In Design categories, judges noted that publications are using color more professionally. Designers are using it to communicate and help direct eye movement, rather than just to decorate. They also noted that there is more labeling and more help for the readers to navigate the publications.

"The contest appears to be fulfilling one of its missions, which is to increase the quality of the publications," said Prof. Moen. "Publishers and editors are improving their work every year. The publications are becoming more professional each year."

The most entries were received in Front Cover, Original Photo (65); Feature Layout, Color (59); Service Feature (51) and News Feature (49). There were no entries in the Front Cover/Newsprint: Original Illustration or Front Cover/Newsprint: Stock Illustration categories (both of which only had four entries last year). Web entries decreased from 10 to 7.

"The purpose of the PPA awards competition is to encourage a high level of journalistic performance and service to communities by recognizing editorial excellence and outstanding visual presentation in parenting publications," said PPA Executive Director James Dowden.

Open to all member publications, the competition was broken into circulation divisions: 30,000 or fewer, 30,001 to 54,999, and 55,000 and above. Members competed for gold, silver and bronze in 22 Editorial categories, 21 Design categories, five Ancillary Publications categories, two Web Site categories and five General Excellence categories (Rookie of the Year, Most Improved, Ancillary General Excellence, Web Site General Excellence and General Excellence), reflecting editorial and design.
Established in March 1988, PPA is a national trade association of regional parenting publications that reaches from Seattle to Boston and from Minneapolis to Miami, and to Canada and Australia. Some of the publications are tabloid newspapers; others are magazines, with 4-color, glossy covers.

Headquartered in Los Angeles, PPA is a nonprofit national organization representing more than 120 parenting magazines and newspapers in the United States, Canada and Australia. For more information about PPA, visit www.parentingpublications.org.
